A Regency mahogany 'chamber' table, circa 1815, attributed to Gillows, the rectangular top with rounded corners and incorporating a hinged ink compartment to the rear edge, above two frieze drawers and two opposing false drawer fronts, on turned tapering legs, terminating in brass caps and castor, 72.5cm high, 93cm wide, 47cm deep For a closely related example of table see, Christie's, London, Important English Furniture, 14th June 2001, Lot 177 (£15,275).A sketch for this type of table appears in Gillows Estimate Sketch Books, dated 1810. Gillows supplied four tables of this pattern in 1811 to T.W. Egerton for Tatton Park, Cheshire. John Bateman (signature to drawer) is listed as working for Gillows and recorded as becoming a freeman in 1825-26. Bateman is listed as an upholsterer but this evidence suggests he must have had some part to play in the making of this table.
