Lot details Japan, 19th century The covers of the miniature writing boxes finely decorated in gold takamaki-e, as well as kirigane and e-nashiji with a torii (shrine gate) in water amid waves, the shoreline in the distant background lined with pine trees, the interiors with nashiji grounds decorated in gold takamaki-e with birds and flowers, each fitted with an inkstone, silver waterdropper, and two brushes, with silver rims. SIZE 4 x 5 cm (each) Condition: Very good condition with minor surface wear, one waterdropper lost. Provenance: From a private collection in New York, USA. A torii is a traditional Japanese gate most commonly found at the entrance of or within a Shinto shrine, where it symbolically marks the transition from the mundane to the sacred.
