Beschreibung:

A rare engraved Jacobite airtwist wine glasscirca 1750
The rounded funnel bowl engraved with a six-petalled rose and two buds and inscribed 'Turno Tempus erit', the reverse with a star and motto 'Fiat', the multi spiral airtwist stem with shoulder and centre knops, the foot engraved with a thistle and motto 'Redeat',
14.8 cm high FootnotesProvenance:
A French private collection
Bonhams sale 1 May 2013, Lot 109, where acquired by Peter Lole
The Peter Lole Collection, Bonhams, Edinburgh, 15th May 2019
This is one of a pair of identical glasses purchased together in France and it is interesting to note that sets of Jacobite glasses have often been discovered in France. The Jacobite mottoes Redeat (May he return) and Turno Tempus erit (For Turnus there shall be a time) are occasionally found together on these attractive glasses. Geoffrey Seddon, The Jacobites and their Drinking Glasses (1995), p.110 suggests that Turnus probably refers to the Duke of Cumberland, with the implication that the Hanoverian victory might be short-lived. Seddon illustrates an identical inscription on a glass which he attributes to engraver A.
