INSCRIBED KANGXI WU ZI NIAN , CORRESPONDING TO 1708, AND OF THE PERIOD
A RARE DATED TWELVE-PANEL COROMANDEL LACQUER SCREEN INSCRIBED KANGXI WU ZI NIAN , CORRESPONDING TO 1708, AND OF THE PERIOD The screen finely carved on one side with an extensive scene in which Shoulao and other immortals descend on billowing clouds to meet Xiwangmu, being attended to by several servants in a terraced courtyard as other immortals approach from crashing waves below, with various other scenes of two figures playing weiqi at a small table while others wash a large elephant below immortals examining a Daoist scroll, the whole framed by flowers and precious objects along the top, and dragons and mythical animals along the sides and bottom, the reverse with a lengthy inscription and Kangxi cyclical date framed by precious objects and various scenes of birds and flowers 111 in. (282 cm.) high, 249 in. (632 cm.) wide
