A RARE BLACK AND RED PAINTED LACQUER BOX AND COVER ENCLOSING THREE BOXES AND COVERSWestern Han Dynasty The domed cover decorated with a persimmon sepal shaped copper ornament on top, overall lacquered in black with red-painted circular bands of cloud patterns alternating by copper bands, the main panel on the sides depicting mysterious animals and winged Immortals in flight among stylised cloud patterns, the three smaller boxes of various shaped lacquered in black and red-painted with cloud patterns, also decorated on top with persimmon sepal shaped copper ornaments and three copper bands, the interior of all the boxes lacquered in red, box. For the external box, compare with a similar parcel-gilt black and red painted box and cover decorated with animal motifs excavated from the Anhui Tianchang Han tomb, illustrated in Zhongguo meishu quanji: Qiqi, Heibei, 1998, p.18. The set of boxes, each shaped differently, placed inside a round external box were used to store cosmetics for ladies from the royal and noble classes. A set of nine black and red painted lacquer boxes were excavated in 1972 at the Hunan Mawangdui Han tomb site no.1. See also a related set of seven boxes with the same design at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, acc.no.1994.10.1a, b–.7a, b. The Idemitsu Museum of Art has a parcel-gilt black and red painted 'cloud patterns' box and cover with a set of seven boxes of various shapes, illustrated in The Beauty of Asian Art: Masterpieces from China, Korea and Southeast Asia, Tokyo, 2015, pp.54-55. 蓋頂飾有柿蒂形銀箔，外嵌銀環三匝，蓋壁及奩壁皆鑲銀箍，朱繪雲紋，中繪羽人動物紋。三個小奩，計長方形一件、馬蹄形一件及圓形一件，蓋頂皆飾有銀箔，外嵌銀環三匝。 與羽人動物紋漆奩比較可參考一個于安徽天長漢墓出土的彩繪銀扣嵌金箔動物紋雙層漆奩，見《中國美術全集 卷8：漆器》，石家莊，1998年，頁18。這類奩盒為西漢新興的品種，胎骨多用夾貯，爲的是使器壁更薄和堅，以便容納小奩。參看一套1972年湖南長沙市馬王堆一號漢墓出土的彩繪雙層九子梳妝奩盒，為專門放置梳妝用具和貼身用品的器物。紐約大都會博物館藏一套七個小奩，館藏編號1994.10.1a, b–.7a, b。另日本出光美術館亦藏有一套鎏金彩繪雲氣紋漆奩連七個小奩，見《東洋の美: 中国・朝鮮・東南アジアの名品》，東京，2015年，頁54-55。
