A particularly attractive, historically significant and very finely executed approx. ¾-inch scale (3½in. gauge) working model of the early Scottish 0-2-4 tender locomotive Earl of Airlie , the original prototype having been built in 1833 The Model This excellent model was built by H. Thomas and was awarded a Bronze Medal at the Model Engineer Exhibition of 1981. The rendering of the complex mechanical linkages of this unusual prototype design is especially well done and amongst many other accurate details incorporated in the ensemble are a properly modelled fire tube boiler (lagged with excellently finished polished wooden strips, appropriate to the historical period), a fully functional and authentic fire grate and ashpan, gab valve gear, axle and hand pumps, mechanical lubricator, working leaf springs and sprung safety valve. Being a practical working example, the usual type of model-style water and pressure gauges are fitted for safety reasons, though the prototype had no pressure gauges and possibly no water gauge either. The paintwork is in very good condition and excellently applied. The tender is of equally good quality and is fitted with hand pump and brake gear. It features the typical configuration of many early British types of the 1830's with a separate water barrel mounted above the coal space. 61.5cm. (24¼in.) long See Colour Illustration
