A pair of Meissen purple-ground chocolate-cups and saucers Circa 1735, blue crossed swords marks, gilder's gilt 6. marks and Dreher's / to each piece The cups of tapering octagonal section with gilt scroll handles, the ground reserved on each side with landscape vignettes by Christian Friedrich Herold within quatrefoil gilt band cartouches, three with figures before dilapidated buildings, one with merchants at discussion on the banks of an estuary, the interiors with an elaborate border of gilt scrolls and geometric forms, the octagonal saucers with similar vignettes, one with boating figures, the other with figures before a wooden bridge and hut, within quatrefoil gilt line cartouches with Böttger -lustre panels and gilt scrolls edged with purple foliage scrolls and shaped panels of diaper ornament, with pendant drapery below and Oriental figures above, within a similar gilt border (one cup and one saucer with a minute rim chip, slight flaking to gilt rims, saucers with areas of slight flaking to to cartouches) (2)
