Beschreibung:

A PAIR OF LARGE PLASTER MODELS OF URNS IN GEORGE III NEOCLASSICAL STYLE 20TH CENTURY, AFTER EARLY 19TH CENTURY EXAMPLES In the style of ancient volute kraters, each cast with Apollo and the Nine Muses in relief, between bands of Vitruvian scrolls, anthemia and swags, on waisted socles The vases 134cm high; 219cm high overall including oak plinth Provenance: Moulded after Coade stone originals at Gosfield Hall, Essex Catalogue Note: The striking Neoclassical design of the present vases was produced by a number of manufactories during the 19th century. Note for example the impressive urns at Anglesey Abbey, which are attributed to the renowned terracotta manufactory of Blashfield. A version of this vase is also recorded on the balustraded terrace at Buckingham Palace. Condition Report: Each urn has the minor marks, knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age, both have some slight surface wear, one with some yellow residue in the recesses, possibly a previous paint. Losses to Vitruvian scrolls (tips and entire scrolls) and to plinths, though possibly this is commensurate with the original urns, one with repair to relief and each with slight surface dimpling and pouring bubbles due to manufacture. Chips to dentil moulded band. Each with irregularity in shape to rim, likely due to form of original vase after which these were modelled. Casting seams visible to either side. Condition Report Disclaimer
