Marks 1901', each with a tulip shaped bowl, knopped stem and circular domed foot, the bowl and foot chased with lilies and with leaves, 21cm (8.25in) high, 695g (22.25 oz) Provenance: bought in the sale these rooms 'Silver' 26th June 1996, lot 229 Gilbert Leigh Marks (1861-1905) was one of the first silversmiths to renounce industrial manufacture in favour of handworking, although he seems to have had little to do with the Arts and Crafts movement, he shared many of its ideals. The importance of his work lies in this ethos and the outstanding quality of its chasing. He is best known for his silver and silver-gilt decorated with naturalistic floral motifs in which his contemporaries perceived a Japanese influence.
