A pair of Arts and Crafts silver hammered bowls by Gilbert Marks, London 1896, signed and dated 'Gilbert Marks 97', hammered and chased with lobing to the sides and with differing fruits, 23cm (9in) diameter, 980g (31.5 oz) Provenance: The Estate of the Late Professor Rupert Hall and Mrs Hall Gilbert Leigh Marks (1861-1905) of all the 'art silversmiths' (as they were known at the time) was possibly the most strongly and publicily committed to the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement. In a career tragically cut short by ill-health he is thought to have produced only between 700 and 800 pieces.
