Finely cast, incised and gilt bronze with adornments in copper repoussé, Hayagriva is striding in alidhasana on snakes over a lotus base, his six radiating arms holding various attributes such as a flaming stem or a scepter of skewed skulls. Provenance: Colonel Yves Onno, military governor of the French garrison of Tianjin, acquired locally in Tianjin, and thence by descent in the same family. After 1907, European nations were permitted to garrison Tianjin to ensure open access to Beijing.
