A marble-topped, gilt brass and damask console table, in the Régence taste, early 19th century, French or possibly Italian, the shallow 'D' shaped, divided, Brèche marble top on brass overlaid volute legs joined by an extravagantly scrolled stretcher, 210cm wide 46cm deep 99.5cm high The singular design of this table appears to be influenced by Jean Bérain the Elder (1637-1711) and his Parisian circle. It was probably designed for a narrow hallway or perhaps to stand against a full-length mirror to create the illusion of space.
