c.1900 Carved with exquisite art nouveau motifs in the form of leaves and berries, brass handles in the form of art nouveau stalks Marked. 141 cm high; 131 wide; 46 cm deep Provenance: Inbar family collection. * Louis-Jean-Sylvestre Majorelle, was a French decorator and furniture designer in the French tradition of the ébéniste (the master cabinetmaker). He was one of the most famous and admired designers in the Art Nou-veau style, and after 1901 formally served as one of the vice-presidents of the École de Nancy. He trained as a painter and studied under Jean-Francois Millet at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1877-79 and was so talented that his work was exhibited at the 1889 Paris Exposition. At the apogee of the Belle époque, during the 1900 Paris World’s Fair (Exposition Universelle), Majorelle’s innovative and beautifully decorative designs triumphed and drew him an international clientele. At the height of his career, he had retail stores in Paris, Lyon, and Lille, as well as Nancy. His workshops produced not only furniture but also lighting, metalwork, and fabrics- all in exemplary Art Nouveau style. Today, his work can be found in the most prominent museums around the world as examples of the Art Nouveau style at its finest.
