A LATE LOUIS XV ORMOLU-MOUNTED TULIPWOOD, AMARANTH, MARQUETRY AND PARQUETRY COMMODE BY JEAN-FRANÇOIS LELEU CIRCA 1764-65 The serpentine-fronted eared brèche d'Alep marble top above two drawers decorated sans traverse with a shield-shaped cartouche of cube parquetry within interlaced strapwork borders and flanked by further geometric parquetry fields and mounted with oak leaf-cast handles suspended from ribbon-bound musical trophies, above an apron mounted with a twin-handled flaming urn and scrolling acanthus, the shaped sides similarly decorated, the angles with acanthus and oak leaf-cast clasps reaching to splayed legs and terminating in similarly cast scroll sabots, stamped three times 'J.F. LELEU' and 'JME', with paper exhibition label 'Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge' inscribed 'Lent by Mrs. Everard Martin Smith 15 August 1929(?)' and a circular blue-bordered paper label, the underside inscribed in white chalk 'N 1' and 'Lady' to the underside of the top, the marble with restored break 34½ in. (88 cm.) high; 61¼ in. (156 cm.) wide; 25 in. (64 cm.) deep
