Beschreibung:

A LATE 19TH CENTURY SILVER MOUNTED OSTRICH EGG CUP AND COVER, PROBABLY HANAU in the Renaissance Revival style, modelled as an ostrich, the standing bird holding a pierced shield depicting a winged herm figure from three chains hung from its beak, flanked by filigree balls, the upper section of the egg cut and mounted with open-work decoration and the wings, with further pierced Renaissance style mounts to the body, the legs and tail naturalistically modelled, and raised on a stepped, circular base cast with lizards, a frog and snail, the lower section with cartouches flanked by C scrolls and fruit, one cartouche marked with a sickle mark, 2580 grams (91 oz) in weight, 48cm high First conceived in the 16th and 17th centuries, the idea of an ostrich formed from the actual egg of the bird appealed to collectors and patrons of the period who were seeking unusual, opulent and thought provoking wonders for their cabinets of curiosity or wunderkammers. The idea was reinvented in the 19th century by many silversmiths and goldsmiths, including Faberge.
