A Large and Unusual Tebako [Occasional Box] or Bunko [Document Box] Edo-Meiji Period (Mid-Late 19th Century) With flush-fitting, slightly domed lid, straight sides and rounded corners, the exterior black-lacquer ground decorated in gold, silver and coloured takamaki-e and hiramaki-e and high-relief shell, ivory and other materials with a kusudama [flower-ball] and several open, half-open and closed fans, the decorative threads from the kusudama extending over the top and sides, the large open fan on the lid with a gakudaiko court drum, a torikabuto cap and sho [pan-pipes] suggesting a court musical performance, other fans with chidori [wave-birds], descending geese, butterflies and chrysanthemums and other motifs, the base plain black lacquer, the interior with sparse gold and silver hirame , some old wear 8½ x 13 x 10 5/8in. (21.5 x 33.0 x 27.1cm.)
