Comprising a series of rare silver gelatin photographs, 5 x 7 in. to 11 x 14 in., showing the matte process for several scenes in 5 MGM films. The photographs show foreground and background images, use of the stand-in, images with "masking," and the final result after the matte process has been accomplished. The photographs feature the "extras" relaxing, complicated lighting set-ups, set construction, and many more behind-the-scenes situations. The first set from A Tale of Two Cities (1935) features 56 images showing 12 different matte processes including the storming of the Bastille, various exteriors and interiors of buildings, various crowd scenes, and city street scenes; Marie Antoinette (1938), which consists of 38 images showing 8 different matte processes including interior shots of Versailles, the village square, and more; Tarzan's Secret Treasure (1941), which consists of 12 images showing 3 different matte processes of Tarzan or "Boy" atop cliffs or tall buildings; Madame Curie (1943) which consists of 29 images showing 6 different matte processes including interiors and exteriors of the Court of Honor, the concert hall, and more; and Mrs. Parkington (1944) which consists of 14 images showing 3 different matte processes including the manor and courtyard, the location for the fox hunt, and the Parkington home.
