Contrabands were African American people who escaped from enslavement. Caption: "383. A Group of 'Contrabands.'" At left side of mount; "1861 The War for the Union. 1865." At right side of mount: "1861 Photographic War History. 1865." At lower left corner of both photos: "383." There is a lot of information on the back. There is no photographer information on this stereoview. However, it is attributed to James F. Gibson who worked for both Alexander Gardner and Mathew Brady. These views were produced, circa 1890, by Taylor, under the auspices of The War Photograph & Exhibition Company. Approximately 4 x 7 inches. NO RESERVE Condition:Both sides: A few spots and specks. When tilted, some scuff marks are apparent. Mount: Wear at corners and along the top edge. Front has light soiling. Back has a few spots, light soiling, and scuff marks.
