The wide cylindrical body thickly potted, the exterior sensitively painted in grisaille enamel with a continuous landscape, on one side a vast waterway traversed by three small boats, on the other sides a richly textured landscape with vertiginous boulders and gnarled trees lining the path crossed by a scholar and and two attendants en route to an elegant pavilion, mountains and further buildings rising all around, the opposite shore with steep cliffs leading to the water, framed by bands painted in faux bois enamels above and below, the biscuit base smoothly polished and centered by a recessed circle covered in a clear glaze.

The present brushpot is inspired by grisaille brushpots of the Yongzheng period. For a later version, comparable in date, composition, and technique to the present example, see one sold at Sotheby's, London, 5 November 2014, lot 273. Compare, also, a Republic period hexagonal brushpot with a grisaille landscape and faux bois borders sold at Sotheby's, New York, 23 March 2019, lot 1695, and a similarly-decorated drum-shaped stand, attributed to the late Qing dynasty / Republic period, sold at Christie's, Hong Kong, 5 April 2016, lot 133.Read MoreAdditional informationAuction informationLOTS IN THE Catalogue WITH A "T" NEXT TO THE LOT NUMBER CONTAIN A US IMPORT TARIFF
