A Great War M.C. group of five to Captain E.G.Godfrey, 6th London Regiment,Military Cross, G.V.R.; British War and Victory Medal (Capt.E.G.Godfrey.); Defence Medal; War Medal. Very fine or better. (5)FootnotesM.C. London Gazette 1.1.1918. Captain Ernest Gordon Godfrey was born in Edmonton, Middlesex in July 1897, he enlisted into the Artist's Rifles as a Private number 3618. He was commissioned into the 6th London Regiment on the 2nd November 1915 serving with the 2nd Battalion 6th Londons in France from the 25th January 1917. The 2/6 London Regiment were part of the 58th (2/1st London) Division. On 21st May 1917 the 2/6th were tasked to attack the Bovis Trench at Bullecourt. It was their first offensive action having entered France in late January. the attack was not successful and the Battalion suffered many casualties. Later they took part in the Battle of the Menin Road between 20-25th September 1917, The Battle of Polygon Wood 26-27th September 1917 and the Second Battle of Passchendale 26th October to the 10th November 1917, in addition to the actions of 1918. Captain Godfrey was appointed acting Adjutant to the 2/6th Battalion from 31 October 1918 to 22 February 1919 and relinquished his commission on the 3 July 1921. He was appointed Captain 6th London Regiment from the TA Reserve of Officers he appears to have left again before the Second World War. He was commissioned Lieutenant 17 September 1940 Regular Army Emergency Commission, Temporary Captain 3 July 1942. He died in Hendon in December 1972.
