A grand piano by Broadwood, London, 1814 The mahogany case cross-banded in rosewood with gilt decoration in cast metal running above the skirting and gilt beading in cast metal running vertically. Raised on four turned and reeded legs with brass collars. The keywell veneered in rosewood, inlaid with foliate brass and brass stringing, the nameboard bearing a rectangular boxwood plaque inscribed: John Broadwood and Sons, Makers to his Majesty and the Princesses, Great Pulteney Street London Golden Square. Six octave keyboard CC–c4 with ivory naturals and ebony accidentals. English grand action, trichord throughout. Divided bridge. Two pedals mounted on a lyre, the right pedal divided for controlling dampers separately above and below middle c, the left pedal controlling una corda and due corde. Serial number 6246 Length 248cm, width 114cm, case height including lid and leg blocks 38.5cm. Literature: The Colt Clavier Collection Golden Jubilee 1944–1981, p. 11, (18) G261B. Provenance: Once the property of the Gluckstein family.
