A grand piano by Broadwood, London, 1794 The mahogany cross-banded case inlaid with boxwood stringing, raised on a trestle stand with four square legs and brass castors. The keywell in satinwood, cross-banded with fruitwood and inlaid with ebony and boxwood stringing. In the nameboard the similarly decorated oval boxwood name plaque inscribed: John Broadwood & Son, Great Pulteney Street Golden Square, London 1794. The five and a half octave keyboard FF–c4 with ivory naturals and ebony accidentals. English grand action, trichord throughout. Divided bridge. Two pedals mounted on the front legs controlling dampers and keyboard shift. Serial number 737 Length 229cm, width 106cm, case height including lid and leg blocks 34cm. Provenance: According to Colt this piano once belonged to the Dukes of Buckingham, and is signed by Broadwood on the underside of the soundboard; November 30th 1794.
