A GERMAN DAMASCENED LEFT-HAND DAGGER WITH EXPANDING BLADES, IN EARLY 17 T H CENTURY STYLE 19 t h Century With tapering blade of flattened-hexagonal section fitted with a pair of sprung side-prongs retained by a sliding catch on the reverse side of the ricasso damascened over its entire length with gold scrollwork, the central section inlaid with a fine silver border and incorporating a German couplet inlaid in gold Gothic letters on both sides (partly rubbed), and also incorporating a stylised pinecone on the outer-face of the ricasso, blackened iron hilt involving arched quillons of flattened bars, the edges with chiselled silver leaves and pellets and with roundel terminals inset with a gilt and blued Roman head cast in relief, side-ring, globular pommel and grip each decorated with a roundel chiselled with a narrative scene, and the entire hilt damascened en suite with the blade within raised silver borders; in its original leather-covered scabbard, the locket and chape chiselled and damascened en suite with the hilt, the former decorated with the figure of Venus, and with matching bodkin. 18¾ i n (36.5cm)
