A FLEMISH TAPESTRY PROBABLY DEPICTING DIDO AND AENEAS BRUSSELS, LATE 17TH/EARLY 18TH CENTURY, WORKSHOP OF JAN FRANS VAN DEN HECKE Wool and silk woven with the two lovers in a landscape setting, the main border with masks among stiff leaf lambrequin, the lower outer slip with Brussels town mark BB and signed JFVH for Jans Frans Van De Hecke approximately 338cm high, 277cm wide This tapestry probably forms part of a series illustrating the tragic love story between Dido, Queen of Carthage and the Trojan hero Aeneas based on Virgil's Roman epic poem The Aeneid. The Van den Hecke tapestry workshop was operative in Brussels in the 16th and 17th centuries. Jan Frans van den Hecke worked with his father Frans, was dean in 1662 and still active until after 1700. Although signed work from his workshop is rare- a comparable tapestry with near identical town marks and manufacturer's marks depicting a mythological scene was sold at Christie's New York, 15th October 2019, lot 313 $23,750
