A Fine Ottoman Qur'an, signed by Darwish Ibrahim Tahir Mustafa, a Student of Mawlana Muhammad Rasim, in Arabic, illuminated manuscript on paper [Ottoman Turkey, dated 1177 AH (1763-64 AD)] complete, 384 leaves (plus 2 flyleaves), single column, 12 lines fine black naskh, headings in white thuluth against gold and polychrome banners, opening 2 surah with gilt headings and elaborate polychrome borders decorated with circling floral vines, colophon signed and dated, a few repairs to old closed tears, some scattered smudges, small repairs to second folio affecting text and illuminated border, 185 by 130 mm.; contemporary morocco with flap, covers ruled in gilt with centrally stamped doublures also in gilt, flap also ruled and stamped in gilt, outer extremities a little rubbed This is a beautifully copied and finely executed Ottoman Qur'an, produced at the height of the calligraphic artistic movement of the mid-eighteenth when scribes were followed the work of master calligraphers Hafiz Efendi and Mehmed Rasim Efendi. Here the scribe names himself a humble student of the master calligrapher Mawlana Muhammad Rasim.
