A Fine Lightweight Brass-Barrelled Flintlock Blunderbuss By Griffin & Tow, London, Circa 1775With barrel flared at the muzzle and signed within an elongated loop along the tapering breech flat, border engraved tang decorated with foliage, signed border engraved flat bevelled lock with safety-catch, border engraved cock and steel, the latter bearing on a ramp, figured full stock (minor old cracks above the tail of the lock) carved with a drop behind the tang, brass mounts comprising scroll side-plate, butt-plate decorated with a flower-head on the border engraved heel tang, trigger-guard with acorn finial and a further flower-head on the border engraved bow, vacant border engraved escutcheon, turned ramrod-pipes, original horn-tipped ramrod with iron worm, and in fine condition, London proof marks 41.4 cm. barrelFootnotesJoseph Griffin and John Tow are recorded at 10 New Bond Street, London, between 1772 and 1782. Tow became Griffin's partner in 1771, and due to the latter's failing health took charge of the business in 1783
