A fine late 19th Century mainly brass model of a four cylinder compound twin beam mill engine With brass clad cylinders 3/4in. and 1¼in. bores x 1½in. stroke mounted one above the other in two pairs, each with common trunk type crosshead guides and crossheads, the crossheads directly coupled to the beam ends, the beams mounted on grasshopper type centre supports with tapered connecting rods, the big ends with bolted brasses, the crankshaft running in three main bearings with twin spoked flywheels with multi-rope grooves. Further details include inlet pipework with main stop valve (lubricator missing) , transfer and exhaust pipework, the valves operated by twin eccentrics, rocking quadrants and beams, with central pivots directly connected to common valve rods, finished in polished brightwork and mounted on a polished brass bed on wood plinth with copper plate stamped 'Model of Sowcar Cotton Mill Beam Engine, situated on site of Oak Bank Works destroyed by fire in 1882. Engine originally single crank, doubled in mid-19th Century. Bore HP 20ins. LP 28ins. Stroke 48ins. 16ft beam RPM 35. WP 160 LBS sq. ins.' -- 10 x 11½in. (25.5 x 29.3cm.) . Glass cover.
