A FINE GEORGE IV SILVER CENTERPIECE ON PLATEAU MARK OF BENJAMIN SMITH II, LONDON, 1823 The circular pedestal base on three lion's paw feet with scrolling acanthus and fruit, the rim with a band of chased water leaves with matting, the waist with applied laurel garland forming cartouches, one cartouche with applied scene of a horse race, with a grapevine border above, the stem formed as a fluted column with spiraling foliage and thistles, flanked by two female and one male classical dancing figures playing musical instruments, surmounted by a glass dish, marked on each figure, base, central column, the rim also stamped B. SMITH, DUKE ST. LINCOLNS INN FIELD, LONDON, FECIT. ; the plateau circular, on conforming feet, with egg and dart border, with an openwork border of thistles and foliage, the field engraved with a coat-of-arms and motto, with a wood backplate, marked on border with maker's mark and date mark only The plateau 22 in. (55.8 cm.) diameter, the centerpiece on plateau 25 in. (63.5 cm.) high; 255 oz. 10 dwt. (7,959 gr.) weight of centerpiece, 133 oz. (4,147 gr.) weight of plateau The arms are those of Ramsay with a martlet for difference for John Ramsay, 4th son of George, 8th Earl of Dalhousie, born in 1775. A Lieutenant-General, he served on the general staff in India. He married in 1800, Mary, the daughter of Philip Delisle of Calcutta, and died in 1842. (2)
