A detailed builder's model of the Shelter Deck Steamer 'Stonegate', built by William Doxford & Sons Ltd. Sunderland for The Turnbull Scott Shipping Co.Ltd. London. --20 x 61in (50.8 x 154.9cm) With masts, derricks, rigging and deck details including anchors, winches, cleats, bollards, ventilators, deck rails, companionways, hatches, deck winches, wheel house with bridge over, with ship's wheel and binnacle, funnel, gratings, four ship's boats with bottom boards and thwarts, awning stauncions and many other fine details. Finished in red, black and varnish with gold plated fittings and mounted on four turned columns (some old damage and loose pieces) . Original glazed case. See illustration 'Stonegate' was stopped in Mid-Atlantic by the German pocket battleship 'Deutschland', all Stonegate's officers and crew were transferred before she was sunk by gun fire. This lot is accompanied by a photograph of the 'Deutschland' inscribed 'In Remembrance of your stay on board the Deutschland - Good Luck!' signed by the captain, it was presented to the master of the 'Stonegate'.
