A Chelsea 'Warren Hastings' type oval Plate | Lot 20 | 2 A Chelsea 'Warren Hastings' type oval Plate, c.1755, the centre painted with a spray of flowers, leaves and flower sprays, the trellis moulded rim with four scroll-edged cartouches, each painted with figures in landscapes, with classical buildings, a ship's sail and horsemen, red anchor mark , 29cm long Pieces of this style are commonly associated with a service belonging to the former Governor-General in the East India Company, which was sold with his effects at Daylesford House in 1818. Warren Hastings (1732-1818) was the first Governor-General of Fort William, Bengal from 1772-1785. He was accused of corruption and impeached in 1787, but after a long trial, was acquitted in 1795.
