A Cased Pair Of 28-Bore Percussion Duelling Pistols Signed John Blanch, London, circa 1815 Converted from flintlock, with browned octagonal sighted barrels, engraved case-hardened patent breeches each with pierced platinum plug, gold-line, and gold-lined maker's stamp, engraved case-hardened tangs each incorporating the back-sight, signed engraved case-hardened detented bevelled locks each with safety-catch and stepped tail, figured walnut half-stocks, chequered butts, engraved blued iron mounts including spur trigger-guards each with pineapple finial, silver escutcheons, barrel-bolt escutcheons and fore-end caps, set triggers, original brass-tipped ramrods, and most of their original finish: in original brass-bound mahogany case lined in plum velvet, with accessories including a tin of caps with Blanch label, the lid with trade label for circa 1811-20, and flush-fitting carrying handle, Birmingham proof marks 15¼in. (38.8cm.) John Blanch, having worked for John Manton, established himself at 39 Fish Street Hill in 1809, premises which had been occupied by Jackson Mortimer (to whom he had been apprenticed) from 1803. From 1825 he worked with his son at 29 Gracechurch St.. The firm of Blanch & Son remained in business until 1942. Herbert John Blanch, his grandson, was the author of the book A Century of Guns (1909)
