Lot details China, 19th century. Each side of the lozenge-shaped vessel is painted in underglaze blue with bagua (trigram) and yin-yang symbols reserved on a diapered ground consisting of hexagonal cells with spirals. The neck with a ruyi, key-fret, and scroll design, and with a key-fret border above the foot. The edges armored with raised flanges. Provenance: British trade. A book on a collection of Indian, Chinese and Japanese art, titled ‘Cimeli d’oriente’ (Relics of the East) by Dr. Ezzelino Magli, Bologna 1935, was found inside the vase and accompanies this lot. It was probably associated with the present lot at some point in the past, because of its content related to the Bagua trigrams. Weight: 2,621 g Dimensions: Height 27.5 cm Bagua, or the Eight Trigrams, is a symbol consisting of eight areas, connecting two neighboring corners of an octagonal trigram towards the center to form one gua. The center contains a yin and yang symbol. In Feng Shui, the Bagua map is used to stabilize, protect, adjust, or restore balance by analyzing and structuring any given space. Each section of the space is believed to relate to various aspects of life and is divided into categories concerning physical and emotional aspects of life such as family and career.
