6 x 15.5", printed paper covers, leather spine. Approx. 150pp. Book belonging to Joshua Hamilton, earliest date on ffep 1834. This has arithmetic and geometry principles (multiplication, division, reduction, proportions), a few business principles (discount, barter, loss & gain) plus a few family notes in back (dates of birth, marriage, death for some of the Hamilton family). One rather interesting page has a chart with values of the various circulating coins, including doubloons, English sterling, French pistoles, and American dollars. Many pages are devoted to "word problems" with an early 19th-century twist, such as converting coin values, how large a pipe is needed to empty a cistern in 30 minutes, etc. There are also loose papers stored in this book, including a copy of a legal decision in Tazwell, TN (Claiborne Co.), appointing school board members since the town failed to elect said members, dated 1868, and a copy of a judgement brought by the Hamiltons against a D. Woodson for taxes on land purchased from the Hamiltons (1872). Most, however, are Sunday School pamphlets and copies of Bible passages and appear to be mostly later than the book (1880's). Also in this lot is a leather wallet with about 50 receipts (tax bills, legal fees), most for a Gale Tyler and Mattie Tyler, but a few for M. Hamilton and a certificate for stock in the Bank of Shawanee signed by J.B. Hamilton. The tax bills are for Lee County, VA, but there seems to be a connection with the Tennessee Hamiltons. Most of these date from the 1880's and 1890's, but a few are as late as 1933. Condition:Book has extensive water damage, but most is still readable. Covers are poor and warped by dampness, but mostly intact. Lower corner of pages missing on about half of the book. Wallet is very worn and is now a piece of leather wrapped around the receipts. All stitching which once gave it form is gone.
