5 cards (of 25), lithographed in colour, depicting clowns and four equestrian acts, one creased, one with small stain at blank corner, New York, P. Lorilland Company, [1888] § Circus Performers, a set of 6 cards [copies of those produced by Testu & Massin in France a few years earlier], lithographed in blue over a gold background, depicting a conjuror, acrobats and clowns, advertising Prince Albert Cigarettes produced by Geo.W. Helme; with four from another set with the same images printed in red over gold, New York, Wemble & Company, [c.1880] § cards (of 6), lithographed in blue over a gold background, depicting acrobats and a clown, advertising Prince Albert Cigarettes produced by Geo.W. Helme, New York, Wemble & Company § Four cards depicting circus artistes performing with large drums, all advertising stores, and a duplicate with alternative advertisement, Brussels, Chromos Algrain § A card with three equestrian scenes captioned “Vocation, Rêve, and Réalité”, advertising Biscuits Pernot, Paris, La Lithographie Parisienne, [c.1890] § A card depicting two elephants on a see-saw, advertising “A la Bonne Fileuse”, Brussels, A. Mertens, [c.1890] and five others of the same period depicting clowns, all lithographed in colour, [c.1880-1890] § Scenes, two complete sets of 6 cards, lithographed in colour, one depicting clowns, acrobats and others, captioned “Specialitäten-Theater”, German text, Antwerp, Liebig Company, [1894]; the other depicting children performing various circus acts, text in French, London, Liebig Company, [1895] § Clowns, two complete sets of 6 cards, lithographed in colour, one depicting clowns with performing animals or birds, the other depicting two clowns and a go-cart in cartoon strip form, both with verse text on backs in German, Cologne, Stollwerck, [1899] § A series of 9 lithographed cards forming a picture story of two clowns and a troublesome donkey, Toulouse/Paris, B. Sirven, [c.1900]. *** One of the American cards advertises Tilyou’s Surf House & Dancing Pavillion and Mammoth Bathing Pavillion at West Brighton Beach, Coney Island. Only one of the four Belgian cards has the imprint of the lithographer; the other imprints are probably those of the letterpress printers who provided the advertising text.
