This second generation evolved from the 230 SL to 250 SL, finally becoming the 280 SL. The SL improved through the years with technical innovation but still managed to keep its fundamental character and identity of an upmarket, quality sports car. Its reputation went from strength to strength, and it was rare to see an episode of Dallas or Dynasty in the 1980s without an SL making a star appearance. The impressive soft-top mechanism which folds down out of sight under a panel ahead of the boot lid gave the car a beautifully sleek, uncluttered appearance.
