Designed to rival the Lamborghini Miura, it was finally released for sale in 1973 at the Paris Motor Show. 387 examples were built with 88 in righthand drive (of which 58 were destined for the UK market) making it the rarest of all Berlinetta Boxers. Though it shared its numerical designation with the Daytona, the Boxer was radically different. It was a mid-engined car like the Dino and the now flat-12 engine was mounted longitudinally rather than transversely. The engine shared its internal dimensions with the V12 from the Daytona but was spread out to 180° as on Ferrari's 1970 Formula One car and was mounted above a five-speed manual transmission. The 365 was updated to the 512 in 1976, resurrecting the name of the earlier Ferrari 512 racer. The engine was larger at 4942cc and had an increased compression ratio of 9.2:1, a new dual plate clutch to handle the added power and ease pedal effort. Dry sump lubrication was used to prevent oil starvation in hard cornering due to revised rear suspension and wider rear tires. External differentiators included a new front spoiler, wider rear tyres; added NACA side air vents ducting air to the brakes and four tail lights instead of six. Only 929 examples were made of the BB before the Bosch fuel injected BB512i was introduced in 1981. This fuel-injection model, one of just 1,007, manufactured in 1982, was finished in its original colour scheme of Rosso Corsa with black sills with a matching cream leather interior. A late-model example, this European 'single-mirror' was sold firstly to Francorchamps/Belgium and then went to Colorado in the United States before selling into a private collection in Switzerland in 1986. The current owner acquired RKU 80X in 2014, some 28 years later and has used it little since. There is a file of invoices accompanying this classic Ferrari and it reportedly had a cambelt change in 2014 and then £15,000 worth of engine work undertaken by Ferrari specialists, GTO Engineering in Reading. This super low mileage example comes with its original matching numbers engine and gearbox and shows in startlingly original condition. Incredibly, it still has the factory plastic covering in the door-sills and the interior is unmarked. Supplied with its original handbooks, tool-roll and MoT test certificate valid until February 2018, these flat-12 Ferrari are real drivers cars and respond fabulously to a firm hand.
