To most people the epitome of the British Single, made by an affectionately regarded Birmingham firm, the Velocette ‘Venom’ was as good as it got. That is until the advent of the ‘Thruxton’ version in 1969.Velocette were very active in long-distance racing and record-breaking events, a Venom being the first motor cycle ever to sustain over 100 mph for 24 hours at Montlhery. The result of this hard-won development work was revealed in the ‘Thruxton’, with its heat-treated VMT crankcases, big-valve head, monster Amal GP carburettor and TLS front anchor. With only around 1000 made before Velocette’s closure, the thunderous ‘Thruxton’ remained a dream for so many riders, most people’s experience being limited to reading the year-long correspondence on the model in Motorcycle Sport. Demand, needless to say, remains heavy for this, the most iconic road Velocette. This lovely example was registered on April 9th 1970 by Perk’s Motors of Bilston, Staffordshire, and has never strayed from the Midlands. Fitted from new with its Lucas competition magneto, it has retained its original specification while undergoing a 100 point restoration, taking over six years, from the hands of a master restorer. Intended always for his own use, the ‘Thruxton’ has proved to be, true to type, rather fierce in practice for its restorer’s advancing years and is thus reluctantly for sale. “I need to be younger for this one” says the owner. Complete with its V5C and authenticatedicated by the Velocette Owners Club Thruxton section as well as the VMCC, this rare and truly beautiful Velo has a new MOT and Road Tax and is ready to be ridden from the sale. If you dare.
