The special-builder's favourite for decades, the versatile Norton Featherbed frame has proved itself capable of accommodating a wide variety of engines ranging from the traditional British single to Japanese fours and even car units such as the Reliant and Hillman Imp. This example though, is fitted with the engine/gearbox from a Norton Commando, so has not strayed so far from home. The frame number - '121966' - is that of a Norton 650SS or 750cc Atlas manufactured circa 1967. When purchased in 1989 by the current vendor - a prominent AMC collector/restorer - the frame housed a Matchless G15 engine, which was removed and given a more appropriate home. Previously in a Seeley frame, the Commando engine dates from 1971 and has been rebuilt by marque specialists Thruxton Motorcycles (Norman White and Tony Holland) incorporating a Peter Williams PW3 camshaft. Other noteworthy features include a Fahron twin-leading-shoe front brake, Akront alloy wheel rims, stainless steel mudguards and spokes, new matching Commando speedometer and rev counter, stock Commando exhaust pipes and twin Amal Concentric carburettors. The machine was completed in the mid-1990s and has been run occasionally, although it has not been used on the road. Carefully stored and presented in generally very good condition, this most attractive all-British 'special' is offered with Swansea V5C registration document and is expected to possess a fresh MoT by time of sale.
