In the autumn of 1951, Volvo introduced its largest truck to date, the L395 Titan with a payload capacity of up to 10 tonnes. The large VDF engine was replaced in 1953 with the further developed D96 engine and the following year, the Titan became the first Volvo truck to be offered with a turbodiesel with airbrakes offered in 1956. In 1959, Volvo introduced the more refined L495 Titan and shortly after, introduced the forward control L4951 Titan Tiptop with a tilting cab. That same year, the 'System 8' came on-line as part of the changes Volvo implemented to update the Titan, the N88. The new truck retained the Titan's cab but underneath it, the conventional N88 sported all the new items from the forward control F88. These included a new engine, a fully synchronized eight-speed gear box and improved chassis and suspension. This 1965 Volvo N88 tractor unit with day cab sits on steel suspension and is powered by a 10 litre turbo-charged straight-six diesel engine. Power is supplied through a fully synchronised R60 gearbox and transmits to the tarmac through 11x20 tyres.
