Oldsmobile was founded by Ransom E. Olds in 1897 and, throughout its 107 year history, the company produced a staggering 35.2 million cars. When it was phased out in 2004, Oldsmobile was the oldest surviving American marque and one of the oldest in the world. General Motors purchased the company in 1908; Ransom Olds left the company in financial difficulties and went on to form the REO Motor Car Company. Officially, the cars were called 'Olds Automobiles', but were affectionately referred to as 'Oldsmobiles'. The Oldsmobile Delta 88 was produced from 1965 through to 1989, while the '88 series of Oldsmobile's date back to the 1940s, and were offered in a variety of trim levels. Better trimmed than the low price Dynamic 88 range, but available in a wider range of body styles than the Super 88 had been, the Delta range was an immediate hit with buyers. To offer the Dynamic 88 a new lease of life, Oldsmobile renamed it the Delmont 88 for 1967 model year. However the Delta continued to climb in popularity to the point where Oldsmobile dropped the Delmont range at the end of the 1968 model run. Eventually the Delta 88 was joined by the Delta 88 Royale, a premium trimmed Delta. In an attempt to modernise marketing efforts as Oldsmobile's fortunes declined, the 'Delta' name was dropped in 1989, although the car lived on as the Eighty-Eight until Oldsmobile ended its production in 1999. This Oldsmobile convertible is best described as 'a car with presence'. The stunning lines of such a large imposing machine, together with the familiar sound of a 7 litre V8 engine combine to make this an extremely desirable classic 60's driving experience. Having spent the last six years in storage, this Delta 88 has recently been re-commissioned and MoT'd, although a little additional time and investment is still required to bring her up to standard. The striking blue paintwork, together with the vast black bench seats contribute to making this Oldsmobile as delightful to look at as to drive. Given the rather modest estimate, this car appears to be superb value.
