1963 Vauxhall VX 4/90 Works Rally Replica Lot Number248 Registration634 CRX Chassis NumberFBH 108643 Engine NumberFBX 11641 Odometer reading21,656 miles EstimateNo Reserve ResultSold - £3,360 Print details Send this to a friend 3 more images Heralding Vauxhall's entry into the international rally scene, three VX 4/90’s represented three Works-supported cars that competed in the 1963/64 Monte Carlo, RAC, Tulip and Welsh rallies as well as the 1963 Rally of the Midnight Sun and the 1963 Spa-Sofia-Liege. The chassis numbers were 2 FTM, 3 FTM and 4 FTM. The middle car was believed lost during a recce, with its crew, and was not retrieved. The last was sold into private hands and still used for what it was built for and 2 FTM is here today. A complete one-off and part of Vauxhall rallying history. 634 CRX was put together as a replica of 3 FTM and thus completing the full line-up of the 1963 team. After the crash where 3 FTM was lost, Vauxhall pulled out of rallying. Colin Field was an apprentice at Vauxhall in Luton and during his time worked with the rally team. In 1964, there was a big question over 3 FTM. Colin could not remember the car coming back to the factory after the Monte Carlo rally. A crash had taken place during a recce and both drivers were killed. Vauxhall then pulled out of international rallying and the cars were offered to staff. 2 FTM went to Wales and Colin acquired 4 FTM and used it in club events. The vender knew Colin Field well and often used to chat about the good old days. It turned out that he had a replica of 3 FTM, 634 CRX. It was not in good order so it was decided to restore the car. The vendor did the body whilst Colin Field used his network of contacts to locate genuine Vauxhall parts. Indeed, the original engine builder, Bill Blydenstein agreed to do the engine work. 4 FTM was sold off to a local Vauxhall dealership and has enjoyed many years of rallies. 634 CRX also went to a new home where it started rallying. In about 2006, the vendor purchased 4 FTM from Nigel Grey, which then joined 2 FTM. About a month later, the vendor received a call from a client in Austria, who was the current owner of 634 CRX, offering the car to complete the set and a deal was done. The vendor rallied 4 FTM for a couple of years before selling it on. He then used 634 CRX in the Rally of the Tests, the last one in 2010. It was then parked up next to 2 FTM and left.
