THE MERCEDES-BENZ 190SL
'With some considerable experience with it during the 5 years since its introduction, we can state unequivocally that this machine is one of the finest 2-seater coupes on the market today. As a tribute to the excellent, all-round, well-balanced design, no really large changes have been made since our first test of the car.' – Road & Track on the Mercedes-Benz 190SL, December 1960.
In 1954, Mercedes displayed a concept at the New York Auto show of a beautiful two-seat roadster with a removable hardtop. This concept came to market in 1955 as the 190SL, a more approachable, less intense sports car compared to the record-breaking 300SL 'Gullwing'. While the 190SL features a carbureted 1.9 liter inline four-cylinder engine compared to the 300SL's direct-injected 3-liter slant six, they share basic engine design, suspension system, and level of detail and craftsmanship that defines Mercedes-Benz.
The new engine, which shared the same bore and stroke of the 300SL, was paired with dual Solex carburetors and produced 120 horsepower. This powerplant was paired with a fully synchronized 4-speed transmission that sent power to the rear swing axles. The 190SL implemented the same suspension systems as the 300SL, affording it confident handling and drivability.
The 190SL is immediately recognizable as a Mercedes, featuring dramatic curves and the restrained use of brightwork that defined this era of Mercedes. Many styling cues are borrowed from the 300SL, notably the massive three-pointed star in the grille as well as the 'eyebrows' over the wheels. While the 190SL did not quite offer the performance of other sports cars of the era, the impeccable quality and attractive styling made the 190 a massive success- selling over 25,000 units before production ceased in 1963. Many of these models were delivered to the United States, where its driving demeanor and elegant styling were highly valued. The 190SL is an important part of the culture of small roadsters in the 1950s, as it demonstrated how luxurious the platform could be.
The sporting elegance of the 190SL coupled to its comfort and adaptability brought the car a lot of success, excelling in long-distance drives all year long thanks to its hardtop. Despite relatively weak performances, the car was well balanced and safe enough so spirited drivers could still find fun in owning them.
"It proved to be fast and tireless, exhilarating to drive and was probably created with long distance, comfortable travel in mind..." - Autocar on the Mercedes-Benz 190SL, 10th January 1956.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
Originally delivered in White paint with White Grey soft top and Red Leather interior, this matching chassis, engine, and body number example received a full nut-and-bolt Concours restoration by Latvian specialists at Auto Classic Car Restorations in the mid-2010s.
No expense was spared along the process, as every part of the car got taken care of, from the smallest bolt to the entire paint that now shows in a striking Dark Grey coupled to a Black soft top, while the interior stayed true to its origin with an entirely restored Red Leather interior. Equipped with a factory-fitted 50-liter fuel tank and rear side-facing seat, this 190SL also carries a full luggage set that was restored with the same attention given as the rest of the car.
Acquired directly from the restoration shop by an Arizona car collector of repute, the car was then purchased by the current owner and maintained in Concours-quality condition. Vouching for its stunning condition, the car got First in Class at the 2017 edition of the Carmel-by-the-Sea Concours on the Avenue.
The car is accompanied by a copy of the original data card, full photo set from the restoration process, original spare wheel, and jack. This astonishing Concours-winning 190SL car is now looking for a new home and owner to please.
