The redesigned 1957 Cadillacs were the ninth-best selling marque in America even though Cadillac saw fit to introduce such extravagances as the Eldorado Brougham, at $13,074 the most expensive car built in America by a margin of $3,000. It was a period of nearly-unbridled optimism, tinged only slightly by hints of a forthcoming recession. But with 146,841 Cadillacs sold any economic malaise seemed to have little effect upon the prospects for General Motors’ luxury brand. The changes that helped keep Cadillac in the forefront of luxury marques included a new cross-braced frame that gave sedan, hardtop and convertible bodystyles a lower stance and more structural integrity. Body designs were a big change form 1956, in many respects (most noticeably in the rear fender fins) emulating the limited production 1955 Eldorado. Grilles integrated complex bumper designs with ample air intake openings. Under the hood the standard 365 cubic inch Cadillac V-8 was tuned to rate 300 brake horsepower at 4,800rpm, continuing Cadillac’s subtle but forceful policy of minimizing its competition even in engine power and giving driving a Cadillac Convertible a particularly forceful dose of prestige. They weren’t going racing, but unless someone had a particularly powerful Buick, Chrysler or Lincoln they challenged a Cadillac only with caution and a generous measure of trepidation. This 1957 Cadillac Series 62 Deville Convertible is a particularly desirable example with a two year old restoration in Alpine White with bright Red and White leather upholstery and a Black cloth top. It is, as most Cadillacs were, loaded with options including abundant power assists, power steering, power brakes, power windows, power seat, WonderBar radio, Autronic Eye headlight dimmer and power antenna. An attractive and very impressive car, the body is straight and the doors (each of them at least as heavy as a Fiat Jolly) close easily and flush. Now a half century plus a year old, but even more impressive for its survival and what it represents of a time when gas was 30¢ a gallon and a buck’s worth was enough to cruise, even in this immense, intoxicatingly impressive Cadillac convertible, for a weekend. It represents an experience worth having and savoring. Priuses and Smarts seek shelter when this 1957 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible approaches, its inexorable passage unhindered by carbon credits.
