La voiture de sport Doretti fut construite par la Swallow Coachbuilding Company qui fit partie de l'empire de William Lyons et qui s'était spécialisée dans la construction de side-cars. Paradoxalement, Swallow Sidecars fabriqua les automobiles « SS » qui prirent le nom de « Jaguar » après 1945. Vendue par Lyons à Tube Investments (TI) et confrontée à un déclin du marché des side-cars, la firme commença à fabriquer la Doretti en 1954 en utilisant le moteur et les trains de la Triumph TR2 installés dans un châssis fabriqué en tubes Reynolds 531 et habillé d'aluminium. Offrant une vitesse de 160 km/h pour un prix très abordable, la Doretti qui pouvait accepter confortablement des conducteurs de grande taille se vendit bien en Californie où l'une de ses grandes rivales s'appelait Jaguar XK 120. Lyons en fut un peu contrarié et il mit la pression sur TI pour qu'ils suppriment la Doretti en menaçant d'aller voir ailleurs pour certains composants qu'ils fournissaient à Jaguar. TI s'inclina et la production de la Doretti cessa en 1955 après 276 exemplaires. Il en resterait aujourd'hui environ 74 connues. Toujours doté de son moteur d'origine qui attaque une boîte à quatre rapports et overdrive, le châssis n° 1024 se trouve en Suisse depuis environ trente ans. Bien entretenue en mécanique et toujours bien entreposée, elle a été entièrement repeinte, regarnie et re-chromée et se présente en excellent état général. A la fois belle et rare, cette Doretti est éligible pour la plupart des plus prestigieuses épreuves historiques européennes. Offering 100mph performance at a bargain price, the Doretti could accommodate taller drivers comfortably and sold well in California where one of its chief rivals was the Jaguar XK120. Lyons was not best pleased and pressured TI to axe the Doretti, threatening to look elsewhere for the components they supplied to Jaguar. TI complied and the Doretti ceased production in 1955 after only 276 had been completed. Around 74 are known to exist today. Retaining its original engine, which drives via a four-speed/overdrive gearbox, chassis number '1024' has been in Switzerland in the current owner's possession for some 30 years. Well maintained mechanically and always kept garaged, it has been repainted, reupholstered, and re-chromed throughout, and is described as in generally excellent condition. Both beautiful and rare, this Doretti is eligible for many of Europe's most prestigious historic motoring events. The car comes with Swiss Carte Grise and is offered without reserve.
