Title: 1918 Red Cross Badge and Scorecard for exhibition match at Wykagyl Country Club Author: ** Place: New Rochelle, NY Publisher: Red Cross / Wykagyl Country Club Date: 1918 Description: With: 3¼x6" printed scorecard with penciled scores and names for: “Miss R” [Elaine Rosenthal] and “BJ” [Bobby Jones] paired together and “A Sterling” [Alexa Stirling] and “Adair” [Perry Adair]; written in same but unknown hand. Issued by Wykagyl Country Club. * And, 3x2" red printed badge tag for July 10, 1918 match: Alexa Sterling and Perry Adair vs. Elaine Rosenthal and Bobby Jones at Wykagyl Country Club. Two rare pieces of golf ephemera and Americana, both for the same 1918 benefit tournament, showcasing four players: Bobby Jones Perry Adair, Alexa Stirling and Elaine Rosenthal. During WWI and with the worldwide flu pandemic, these four went on a tour to raise money for the American Red Cross. Bobby Jones (1902-1971) was only 16 at the time of this 1918 tournament. Alexa Stirling (1897-1977) is known as “The Girl Who Beat Bobby Jones” as she was the only woman golfer to defeat Jones in a serious competition; however, he was only 6 and she was 12 – an obvious disadvantage. Stirling also won three consecutive U.S. Women's Amateur titles in 1916, 1919 and 1920 (none played in 1917-18 due to the WWI). Includes a copy printed group photo of the four Red Cross Benefit Golf Tour 1918 participants. Lot Amendments Condition: Some soiling and other mild wear to scorecard, still very good; badge nice and clean. Item number: 193608
