WILLIAM DENISON
WILLIAM DENISON The Cricketer's Companion ... Season 1845 London: Simpkin, Marshall; Rudolph Ackermann and sold by R. Dark [and 11 others], [1846]. 12mo., 4 advertisement leaves at end, facsimile wrappers, red speckled edges. Provenance : Robert Stratten Holmes (signature on title dated Liverpool, 23.7.[18]86) -- [J.W. Rimington-Wilson] -- [E.D.R. Eagar] -- [John Arlott] (previously bound with lot 118). Third edition. In his opening review, Denison refers to 1845 as "a batting and not a bowling season", much interfered with by the mania for railway speculation. "But while there was this falling-off in the better class, or gentlemen's matches, there was an astonishing increase in the number of matches got up and played by the respectable tradesmen and labourers". Shortage of players also meant there had been more mixing of classes, leading to "a greater congeniality of feeling" than hitherto (pp. iv-v). Allen 46; Padwick 1068.
