Clement Junior, sold by J.H. Dark [and others], [1844]. [2], iv, 54p. (A few minor marginal stains.) Original plain buff wrapper bound in at front. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. [ Bound with :] The Cricketer's Companion ... Season 1844 . London: Sherwood and Co., and sold by W. Clement Jun., R. Dark [and others], [1845]. xii, 124p. (P. 124 misnumbered p. 133). (Without wrappers or ads.) Second edition, FIRST ISSUE. [ and :] The Cricketer's Companion ... Season 1845. London: Simpkin, Marshall and Co., Rudolph Ackermann and sold by R. Dark [and others], [1846]. xvi, 100p. (Without wrappers or ads.) Third edition. [ and :] Cricket. Sketches of the Players . London: Simpkin, Marshall and Co., Rudolph Ackermann R. Dark [and others], 1846. viii, 76p. (Occasional stains, without wrappers.) FIRST EDITION. First three editions of the Companion in one volume with the Sketches , 12mo (166 x 105mm). 20th-century blue and brown buckram for MCC by E. Gray. Provenance : George W[illiam] King (1822-1881, inside front wrapper with signature dated 'Oct. 21 1867' and his list of contents, further signature, address and date on front blank to second work: 'G.W. King 26 Montpelier Road May 8, 1845'). A record for the 1843-1846 seasons, published in the years 1844-47, Denison's Companion was the historical successor to the score books of Britcher and Bentley, and with Lillywhite's Guide set the precedent for Wisden's Almanack . George W. King an amateur who played for Sussex, himself features in the scores though not in the biographical Sketches . FINE SET. Padwick 1068; 876 and 7201.
