STUYVESANT, Peter (1602?-1682), Dutch Governor of New Amsterdam . Manuscript document signed ("P Stuyvesant" with large calligraphic flourish), "Fort of Niew Amsterdam" [New York, N.Y.], 16 May, 1664. 1 page, oblong folio (13 x 16 ½in.). LARGE PAPER SEAL WITH EMBOSSED BEAVER EMBLEM (symbol of New Netherland), signed by scribe Carel Van Brugge, text in a clear hand., with flourished ornamental capitals. A few very minor nicks and spots, but a very fine example. Matted and framed.

LARGE PAPER SEAL WITH EMBOSSED BEAVER EMBLEM (symbol of New Netherland), signed by scribe Carel Van Brugge, text in a clear hand., with flourished ornamental capitals. A few very minor nicks and spots, but a very fine example. Matted and framed. A GRANT OF LAND ON MANHATTAN ISLAND, 1664. Provenance : James H. Manning (sale, Anderson Galleries, 16 January 1926, lot 745, illustrated) -- Hall Park McCullough -- The present owner. Stuyvesant confirms the grant of a plot of land to Daniel Terneur: "Petrus Stuyvesant, on behalf of their Excellencies the Lords States General of the United Netherlands and the Honorable Lords Directors of the Priv. West Indies Company...together with the Honorable Council...have given and granted to Daniel Terneur on the Island of Manhattans about the Town of new Harlem a certain parcel of land...Lying against the Land of Jochim Pieterse...also three parcels at Van Ceulen's Hoeck." As proprietor, Terneur agrees to "acknowledge and obey their Patrons as good inhabitants are in duty bound to do," and to submit to "the payment of Tythes" and "other such burdens and imposts as may be required from the Settlers..." Documents signed by this important Dutch Governor are now very uncommon on the market.
