STUYVESANT, Peter (1602?-1682), Dutch Governor of New Amsterdam . Manuscript document signed ("P Stuyvesant" with large calligraphic flourish), "Fort of Niew Amsterdam" [New York, N.Y.], 16 May, 1664. A GRANT OF LAND ON MANHATTAN ISLAND, 1664 Stuyvesant confirms the grant of a plot of land to Daniel Terneur: "Petrus Stuyvesant, on behalf of their Excellencies the Lords States General of the United Netherlands and the Honorable Lords Directors of the Priv. West Indies Company...together with the Honorable Council, declares that today...they have given and granted to Daniel Terneur on the Island of Manhattans about the Town of new Harlem a certain parcel of land...Lying against the Land of Jochim Pieterse...also three parcels at Van Ceulen's Hoeck." As proprietor, Terneur agrees to "acknowledge and obey their Patrons as good inhabitants are in duty bound to do," and to submit to "the payment of Tythes" and "other such burdens and imposts as may be required from the Settlers..." Documents signed by this important Dutch Governor are now quite rare on the market. In the last 21 years, according to ABPC, only four documents and two signatures have been offered (the last at Christie's, 5 December 1997, lot 109, dated the same year, was for land near present-day Albany, $7,000). Provenance : James H. Manning (sale, Anderson Galleries, 16 January 1926, lot 745, illustrated) -- Hall Park McCullough -- The present owner.
