Manuscript document signed "P Stuyvesant," in Dutch, issued to Wolfert Gerritsz van Couwenhoven and the inhabitants of New Amesfoort, granting a plot of land on Long Island.
Fort Amsterdam” [New York], 19 April 1657. 1 page, with original deckle edged (13x16 inches, 325x405 mm). Countersigned below Stuyvesant by another official. With the paper-covered wax seal intact. Condition: Separations along folds with paper loss but only minor losses to text, one fold repaired with tape, very minor foxing and soiling, overall in remarkable condition. impressive new york colonial land deed signed by peter stuyvesant, the last colonial governor of new amsterdam. The Dutch document reads: “Petrus Stuyvesant and Council, on behalf of the directors of the West India Company, grant to the inhabitants of the village of Amesfoort on Long Island, full ownership of a parcel of marshland, abutting on the south east side of the Flats on the north side of the boundary of Midwout … on the west side of the point of Konarsesingh, provided that they, the inhabitants already there or yet to come, recognize the Lords Director [of the West India Company] as their superiors under the sovereignty of their High Mightinesses, the Lords States General, and obey the Director and Council in everything etc. as stated in more detail in the patent or ground-brief for their land…” By 1647, the settlement founded by Wolfert Gerritsz van Couwenhoven had slowly grown into a village and was named New Amersfoort (later to be renamed Flatlands by the British). This deed confirms a parcel of land contingent to Couwenhoven and Hudde's purchase from the Lenape Indians in 1636 [see the previous lot] in exchange for New Amersfoort's allegiance to the Dutch West India Company. This latter condition arose from the July 1652 proclamation by the Company which annulled grants of private ownership. An interesting feature of this grant are the early names of various spots in Brooklyn, still extant today (e.g. Midway, Conarsie, etc.). Only a handful of documents signed by famed Stuyvesant have appeared at auction in the last quarter century, and most in poor condition. a fine example of a document signed by stuyvesant.
